The Punjab government has taken a major step to support students by expanding the quota for bike distribution. Initially set at 20,000, the program has now been increased to 27,200 bikes. This initiative aims to improve students’ mobility and ease financial pressures, especially for those from underprivileged backgrounds.
Key Highlights of the Scheme
1. Electric Bikes for Female Students
All female applicants under this scheme will be provided with electric bikes. This move supports eco-friendly transportation and encourages women’s participation in sustainable commuting.
2. Free Bikes for Orphan Students
In a compassionate gesture, the Punjab Transport Department announced that orphan students will receive bikes free of cost, ensuring inclusivity in this initiative.
3. Loan Facilities for Students
The Bank of Punjab has approved loans for 20,000 students to facilitate bike purchases. This arrangement makes owning a bike more accessible for students facing financial constraints.
Current Distribution and Upcoming Plans
- Distributed Bikes:
Over 5,000 petrol-powered bikes and 2,000 electric bikes have already been handed over to eligible students. - Future Targets:
The government is set to distribute an additional 6,500 electric bikes in the coming months to meet the growing demand. - Insurance and Maintenance:
Each bike comes with two years of insurance and free service, ensuring peace of mind for students. - Waiting List:
Over 15,000 students are currently on the waiting list and will receive their bikes soon.
Addressing Challenges
The Punjab Cabinet initially approved 20,000 electric bikes, but challenges like low mileage and battery theft prompted the inclusion of petrol-powered bikes in the program.
Financial Relief Measures
To further ease the financial burden on students, Maryam Nawaz announced:
- Reduced Down Payment: Students can now avail bikes with a down payment of just Rs. 25,000.
- Affordable Monthly Installments: The installment plan is set at less than 5,000 PKR per month.
Rewards for Academic Excellence
A separate scheme is under development to award bikes to students who achieve outstanding exam results, promoting academic excellence alongside mobility solutions.
This comprehensive initiative by the Punjab government reflects its commitment to empowering students, addressing their transportation needs, and fostering inclusivity. The focus on electric bikes for female students and free bikes for orphans highlights the program’s socially responsible approach.
